Why was Houtz Cello Academy created?
In June 2025, Jezreel Houtz— Houtz Cello Academy's founder & cello teacher—faced a question every instructor knows all too well: Why do so many students fail to practice?
After deep reflection, he arrived at a powerful realization: the problem isn't the students—it's us, the teachers.
Too often, we cling to traditional methods instead of seeking bold solutions to this age-old challenge.

Consider this: Students rarely struggle to attend a scheduled weekly lesson. Do they suddenly find motivation for their instrument the moment class begins? Or are we overlooking a simple truth with enormous potential?
The answer lies in human nature. We show up for others far more readily than we do for ourselves.
Yes, practicing would be something the teacher expects from the student, but there's no way to hold the student accountable. With lessons, it's obvious if the student has failed to show up. On top of this, a lesson is an appointment with a clear, immediate goal: Be there and participate for an hour.

This structure overcomes procrastination effortlessly—even for those who struggle with the most. Yet when it comes to daily practice, that built-in accountability vanishes.
Students, especially young ones, thrive with external structure and guidance. Without it, consistent practice becomes an uphill battle for most
Through trial and error, Jezreel developed a transformative solution: Guided Practice Sessions—live, online private cello lessons via Zoom designed specifically to provide the accountability students need.
What began as a simple way to ensure daily practice and offer straightforward routines quickly evolved into something far more powerful. Guided Practice Sessions became an unparalleled opportunity to teach the cello comprehensively, addressing technique, musicality, and habits in real time.
What makes Guided Practice Sessions superior to traditional weekly lessons?
-
Immediate application of tips: Students are able to practice and solidify techniques while the concepts are fresh. When a student struggles, adjustments happen within minutes—not a full week later—preventing bad-habits from taking root.
-
Answering student questions: since the teacher is close by, students can be sure their questions will be answered quickly, and problems resolved sooner than later

-
Substantially more practice time: Students receive multiple hours of structured practice each week—time that would rarely occur otherwise.
Once Jezreel realized how affordable sessions could be—making high-quality, frequent sessions accessible to more families—he knew this approach had to become widely available. That conviction led him to found Houtz Cello Academy, where cello lessons are reinvented through the innovative Houtz Cello Method and Guided Practice Sessions.
At Houtz Cello Academy, we're committed to helping every student unlock their potential—not through more rigid tradition, but through smarter, more effective support that aligns with how people actually learn and stay motivated.
